CNYCOSH  2006 – 2007 Training Topics

Accident Investigation and Prevention: A 2 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session the participants will be able to describe at least two things that OSHA or a Health & Safety Committee would look for when investigating an accident, and at least three things that can be used in accident prevention.

 

Accident Investigation in Industrial Settings: A 2 hour course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify the agencies which may have to be notified of different types of workplace accidents, describe the role of industrial hygienists in evaluating and responding to workplace accidents, and identify local resources for medical evaluation and screening for workers who may have been injured or otherwise affected by the accident.

 

Advanced Topics in Safety & Health: As series of three 2 hour sessions for up to 30 people.  By the end of the sessions, the participants will be able to identify OSH hazards in two or more advanced OSH topic areas, identify two methods of hazard abatement in each topic area.

 

Aerial Lift Safety:  A two hour course for up to 15 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify three or more hazards of operating a power-driven aerial lift, describe three or more ways to prevent injury to the operator of an aerial lift, describe two or more ways to prevent injury to those present in the area in which an aerial lift is being operated, and demonstrate safe operation on one or more aerial lifts used in their workplace.

 

Application of Workplace Safety Skills: A 2 hour course for 15 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to describe the on-site procedures established by their company in one or more areas of safety and health, to demonstrate how those procedures would be applied in a location at their workplace, and evaluate the procedures, supplies, or conditions that may need to be modified or improved in this area.

 

Asbestos Hazards in the Workplace: A 1 hour course for 20 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to identify 2 or more types of building materials that may contain asbestos, one or more health concerns related to asbestos exposure, and one or more resources from which to seek information about potential asbestos exposure.

 

Basics of Safety & Health: A series of sessions of 2 hours each for 25 people.  By the end of the sessions, participants will be able to identify at least 2 workplace health hazards, identify at least two methods of reducing workplace safety hazards, and identify two or more key components of one or more OSHA standards related to their workplace.

 

Basics of OSHA Safety Regulations:  A 2 hours course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the sessions, participants will be able to identify the key components of OSHA standards as they apply in their worksites for at least one of the following topics:  Chemical Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, Lockout/Tagout, Fire Protection, Electrical Safety, Means of Egress, Walking and Working Surfaces, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Materials Handling and Storage, Machinery and Machine Guarding, Welding Cutting & Brazing, Permit Required Confined Space, and OSHA recordkeeping.  At the end of the session, participants will be able to identify appropriate methodologies to apply best practices to the implementation of these regulations.

 

Blood Borne Pathogens (and Infectious Diseases)-Awareness Level: A 1hour course for up to 30 people. By the end of the session, the participants will be able to describe one or more differences between two blood borne or airborne diseases they may be exposed to in the workplace, and two or more ways to avoid exposure to one or more blood borne or airborne infectious diseases in the workplace.

 

Blood Borne Pathogens (and Infectious Diseases) – For First Responders: A 2 hour course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to describe the routes of transmission for HIV and Hepatitis A, B, & C, identify several components of the OSHA BBP Standard including requirements for post-exposure follow-up, and identify at least three ways to avoid exposure to blood borne pathogens in the workplace. 

 

Common Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace:  A series of sessions of 2 hours each for a total of 8 hours for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify at least 4 different categories of chemicals that workers may encounter on the job, describe potential hazards presented by at least 3 categories of common workplace chemicals, and describe the steps that may be taken to reduce, eliminate, or control workplace exposure to 3 categories of workplace chemicals.  Participants will also be able to describe the provisions of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard and at least one other State or Federal regulation that may apply to workplace chemicals.

 

Confined Space:  A 1 hour course for up to 25 people. By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe what a confined space is, identify two or more hazards of entry into a confined space, and two or more ways to prevent injury when entering a confined workspace.

 

Construction Safety: A 10 hour course for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to list two or more hazards involved in at least two different areas of concern in construction safety, and they will be able to identify three or more ways to remain safe while working on a construction site.

 

Construction Safety Topics: A 4 hour course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify hazards involved in 2 or more construction settings, identify the area of law and/or regulation that would provide standards regarding these situations, and suggest recommendations to prevent injury in regards to these hazards.

 

Current Issues in Industrial Hygiene: A 3 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify 2-3 issues in workplace safety that may be addressed by an industrial hygienist, identify at least two issues of current interest in the field of industrial hygiene, and describe some of the hazards and abatement strategies that may be involved when considering these issues.

 

Current Issues in Occupational Safety and Health: A 2 hour course for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session the participants will be able to identify at least two issues of current concern in OSH, and identify at least two factors that contribute to workplace illnesses or injuries and are currently a source of concern or debate.

 

Developing Safety & Health Presentation Skills: A series of sessions of 2 hours each for up to 20 people.  By the end of the series, the participants will be able to describe how to construct a safety presentation outline, to identify two or more key strategies for effective verbal safety presentation, and identify two or more key qualities of effective audio-visual and handout materials in an effective verbal safety presentation.  Advanced trainees will also be able to deliver and engage in the evaluation of basic safety training presentation material.

 

Electrical Safety: A 1 hour course for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe the difference between conductors and insulators and identify one or more example of each.  Participants will also be able to list two or more ways to reduce the risk of fire or shock due to electrical hazards.

 

Emergency Response & Crisis Management: A 1 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify two or more factors that must be considered by workers and by management when responding to an emergency situation at work, and two or more procedures that can aid in the management of a workplace emergency or health & safety crisis.

 

Ergonomic Awareness and Analysis: A 1 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session the participants will be able to list three or more risk factors for cumulative trauma disorders generally or in their specific industry, identify at least two illnesses or injuries that are related to ergonomics issues, and identify at least one way to reduce ergo risk factors in their specific industry.  Note: This course may be specifically geared to ergonomic concerns in a particular industry, especially in relation to warehouse, nursing home, and office workers.

 

Ergonomic Programs:  A 2 hour course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the session the participants will be able to list three or more components of a comprehensive ergonomics compliance program, identify one or more jobs at their workplace with ergonomic risk factors that can be addressed through an ergonomics program, and identify two or more strategies through which an ergonomics program may address ergonomic risk factors at their workplace.

 

Fall Protection: A 2 hour course for up to 30 people. By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe the difference between the concepts of fall prevention and fall arrest, and at least one or more examples of each type of fall protection.

 

Fire Safety:  A 2 hour course for up to 20 people. By the end of the session, participants will be able to list the components of a fire, two or more sources of heat, and two or more

ways to avoid getting trapped in a fire.  When added to the content of instruction, participants will be able to operate a fire extinguisher.

 

Fork Truck/Fork Lift Safety (General Awareness):  A two hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify three or more hazards of operating a power-driven fork truck, describe three or more ways to prevent injury to the driver of the fork truck, describe two or more ways to prevent injury to those present in the area in which a fork truck is being operated, and demonstrate safe operation of one or more fork trucks used in their workplace.

 

Hazard Communication & Chemical Safety:  A 1 hour course for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to list two or more ways chemicals can get into the body, two or more components of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, and identify two or more key components of an MSDS sheet.

 

Health & Safety Committee Development: A 1 hour course for up to people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to list 3 or more activities that a H&S Committee may engage in, and identify two or more strategies to maximize the effectiveness of H&S Committees in addressing workplace S&H issues.

 

Hearing Protection & Hearing Conservation: A 1-3 hour course for 1 to40 people.  By the end of the session the participants will be able to identify the decibel level at which hearing protection is required by the OSHA Hearing Conservation Standard, to identify two or more components of the OSHA Hearing Conservation Standard, and describe two or more ways that workers can protect their hearing at work.

 

Indoor Air Quality for Non-Industrial Settings: A 2 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to list two or more indoor sources of poor indoor air quality and two or more outdoor sources of poor indoor air quality. Participants will also be able to identify two or more recommendations to preserve good indoor air quality during building construction projects.

 

Industrial Emergency Response:  A three day intensive course for up to 25 people (eight hours a day for a total of 24 hours) taught by authorized UAW Local Union Discussion Leaders ((LUDL’s).  By the end of the session, participants will be able to inspect and don a SCBA, use a 4-gas air sampler, use the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Hazardous Chemicals and the North American Emergency Response Guidebook, set up a decontamination line, read an MSDS sheet, inspect  and wear an air purifying respirator, describe diking, damming and blocking operations in the cold area of a chemical or hazardous material spill, and evaluate an emergency response plan.

 

Lockout/Tagout & Hazardous Energy: A 1 hour course for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify at least 3 kinds of potentially hazardous energy, identify the purpose of the OSHA lockout/tagout standard, and identify what kind of worker would be authorized to remove a lock out device.

 

OSHA 10 or 30 Hour Construction Safety Course:  A multi-session course for up to 20 people taught by OSHA authorized instructors using approved curriculum  (CNYCOSH Trainers Christine Body and John Quinlan are authorized trainers).  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify key requirements of several OSHA construction standards including:  Fall Protection, Confined Space, Scaffold Safety, Stairways and Ladders, Electrical Safety, Hand & Power Tools, Personal Protective Equipment, Materials Handling, and Excavations.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify two or more hazards and two or more injury prevention strategies on each topic area.

 

Preventing Workplace Violence:  A 2 hour course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the session the participants will be able to list at least two risk factors for violence in the workplace, and two preventative measures that could be applied to their workplace or similar facilities.

 

 Reproductive Hazards in the Workplace: A 1 hour course for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify 2 or more reproductive hazards, 2 or more effects of chemicals on the male and female reproductive cells, systems, or on a developing fetus, and at least 2 chemicals that might pose a reproductive hazard to men or women.

 

Researching Topics in Workplace Safety & Health Issues:   A 1 hour course or series of courses for up to 20 people.   By the end of the sessions, the participants will be able to list 2 or more general sources of technical information in occupational safety and health, list 2 or more local resources for safety and health information, and describe one or more methods for identifying occupational safety and health information in a library, OSH resource center, or through the internet.

 

Responding to Unplanned Exposures/Releases of Hazardous Materials:  A 3 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify the regulatory agencies which may be involved when workers are exposed to potentially hazardous materials, describe the assistance that industrial hygienists may provide in evaluating and responding to such situations, and identify local resources for medical evaluation and screening for workers who may have been exposed.

 

Resources for Ill & Injured Workers: A 1 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify the difference between disability and workers compensation in NYS, to identify the intent of the federal ADA and FMLA, and list two local sources of information available for ill or injured workers.

 

Risk Mapping & Job Hazard Analysis: A 2 hour course for up to 30 people. By the end of the session, the participants will be able to break the activities of a job into three or more steps, identify at least one potential hazard and abatement recommendation for each step.

 

Safety Strategies for Field Workers and Intensive Case ManagersA 2 hour course for up to 325 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe two or more hazards faced by social service workers while in the field, and describe two or more strategies that can reduce these hazards.  Special attention will be given to the potential for assault by clients and the importance of maintaining contact during independent work on field assignments.

 

Understanding OSH Resources:  An hour long course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to identify categories of hazards that might be encountered at a workplace, identify the categories of hazard control or abatement, and list at least 2 Resources participants can use to seek out workplace H&S Information.

 

Using the Internet for Safety & Health Research A 1 hour course for up to 20 people.  By the end of the session, participants will be able to list 4 or more websites with occupational safety and health information, describe how to find those sites on the internet, and to select links and connect to subsections of at least 2 safety & health websites.

 

Welding Safety:  A 2 hour course for up to 30 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to list two or more health hazards from engaging in welding processes, and at least two ways to avoid health hazards from engaging in welding processes.

 

Working Together for Occupational Safety & Health:   A 2 hour course for up to 25 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to identify and evaluate one or more hazards in their workplace, suggest ways to reduce or eliminate these hazards and report on this process to their co-workers, supervisors, and/or managers.

 

Workplace Safety Plans, Procedures, & Training: A 1 hour course for up to 15 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to identify the on-site safety plans, procedures, or training programs that may be required for their workplace or established by their company in one or more areas of safety and health, identify any plans, procedures, or training programs that may be missing or inadequate, and generate a list of improvements and/or modifications that may improve their on-site plans, procedures, and training programs.

 

Workplace Safety Surveys: A 1 hour course for up to 15 people.  By the end of the session, the participants will be able to conduct a self-inspection of their workplace for safety and health hazards, generate recommendations to improve identified hazards, and evaluate the adequacy of on-site safety precautions established by their company in one or more areas of safety and health.
